Quintana v. Miley - Game Preview & Lineups 5/10
/After a tough stretch against the Rangers, Tigers, and Red Sox, the White Sox have had a chance to pad their win total against the Cubs and Diamondbacks — two of the weakest teams in all of baseball. Tonight, the White Sox have a chance to go two games above .500 for the first time since April 2nd. However, although the Diamondbacks have been horrible this year, Arizona's offense has been bad, but ordinary bad (25th or so in the majors). The main culprit has been their pitching staff as they are the only team in the majors to have allowed more than 200 runs. Therefore, on nights where they get a decent pitching performance they can be a tough opponent.
Wade Miley is a pretty good bet to pitch well on a given night, as he has been an above average pitcher over the course of his career, although in an unremarkable fashion. Miley doesn't really strike that many guys out, doesn't walk too many people, and he gives up a fair amount of home runs although when you take his home park into account, it's pretty whatever too. Low 90s heat, a slider, and a change are what will be on the menu.
The White Sox will send Jose Quintana to the mound. With Chris Sale on the DL, Quintana is easily the White Sox's best pitcher. It would be nice if the offense could kick in early enough to get him a win instead of a no decision.
On the year, the White Sox have been slightly better against right-handed pitching than against southpaws, so perhaps that bodes well. Interestingly, so far Jose Abreu has shown a reverse platoon split as well, with a .978 OPS against RHP against .925 against LHP.
Another random note, the bullpen has lowered its ERA below 4.00 as a group, even with Maikel Cleto getting obliterated the other night. Coincidentally, Cleto was designated for assingment prior to Saturday's game and veteran journeyman Frank Francisco will take his spot in the bullpen.
