Despite being an entirely unrelated action, securing Samardzija's services for an extended period of time is what is supposed to make sending a prospect package--albeit, not a very strong one--make sense. It's not necessarily that the price is too high, it's that the 2015 White Sox are not a super team, so moves that only benefit this coming year would be...not the best.

Super rich baseball team owners ultimately don’t have to sacrifice anything real, and should thus be as aggressive as possible, but it’s still fun to watch them contort themselves. But so far into the draft signing period, the Sox aren’t doing anything contorting besides what they’re doing to expectations.

Ryan Howard was still pretty awesome when he signed his extension with the Phillies, now the emptied husk of his once robust production is the designated cudgel of every saber-friendly analyst. Cabrera is a much better actor, but the script still stinks.
