Samardzija "open to extension," what should he be offered?

Inking a contract extension to Jeff Samardzija has been a looming unfulfilled achievement in this otherwise sea-change White Sox offseason. Despite being an entirely unrelated action, securing Samardzija's services for an extended period of time is what is supposed to make sending a prospect package--albeit, not a very strong one--make sense. It's not necessarily that the price is too high, it's that the 2015 White Sox are not a super team, so moves that only benefit this coming year would be...not the best.

Free Agent Wishcasting - Part Two

The White Sox continue to explore new ground as an organization. They have emerged on the other side of Hitting Rock Bottom (2013), Admitting You Have A Problem (2013 Trade Deadline and Offseason), and are now ending Phase One of the Rapid Rebuild. They now have a new, good core around which to build (Sale, Abreu, Quintana, Eaton, and Alexei) and a ton of free agent money to do so. I recommend reading James' article on this topic first, but I wanted to poke around and see what else the White Sox could actually do with their newfound wealth.

Draft Signing Update

The MLB Draft and its new bonus pool restrictions are very relatable for the non-super rich baseball team-owning class. There is the initial thrill of buying something exorbitant and fancy, and days and weeks afterward spent trying to figure out how the hell to pay for it. What drastic cutbacks to other areas of life can be made to accommodate this indulgence?

Super rich baseball team owners ultimately don’t have to sacrifice anything real, and should thus be as aggressive as possible, but it’s still fun to watch them contort themselves. But so far into the draft signing period, the Sox aren’t doing anything contorting besides what they’re doing to expectations.

Miguel Cabrera agrees to never leave Detroit. Ever.

Miguel Cabrera was likely always going to have one last mondo-payday, and his elite skills were likely always going to allow him to receive something that outstripped contracts given to Prince Fielder, Joey Votto and even Albert Pujols. But again, he had two years to get through, still produce and still ward off the creeping specter of injury before he could demand such things.

Ryan Howard was still pretty awesome when he signed his extension with the Phillies, now the emptied husk of his once robust production is the designated cudgel of every saber-friendly analyst. Cabrera is a much better actor, but the script still stinks.

Jose Quintana is a made man

Jose Quintana is a made man

This is the same headline I used way back when Sergio Santos signed his contract extension right after the end of the 2011 season. Like the five-year, potentially $26.5 million deal Jose Quintana agreed to Monday, Santos' deal was littered with club options and was viewed to be an exceedingly team-friendly deal for an exciting young talent.
