White Sox Sign Tommy Hanson to Minor League Deal

The White Sox are never satisfied when it comes to arm reclamation projects. The newest in a long line of applicants to Cooper University is right hander Tommy Hanson, signed to a minor league contract according to Jon Heyman.

Hanson was once a very promising pitcher for the Braves, busting into the league with a 2.89 ERA over 127.2 innings of work in 2009. He’s seen his effectiveness drop every year following, resulting in a trade to the Angels prior to the 2013 season for reliever Jordan Walden. His season in Anaheim was his worst statistically, with an ERA+ of 70. It was also a tough season for Hanson off the field, as his brother died early on in the season, prompting some to believe that there was simply a mental hurdle to get past before he could reclaim some of the promise he once took to the mound.

The Rangers gave the 27-year old a chance to crack their injury-laden rotation but he failed to make the cut after posting a 6.43 in 14 spring innings. That being so, unless Don Cooper or anybody else in the organization has an idea about what causes the ineffectiveness, he won't being seeing any time in a White Sox uniform short of a string of unfortunate injuries for those ahead of him.
