The Catbird Speaks 4.6.15 - It's Opening Day

It's Opening Day. Today is Opening Day. The White Sox will play their Opening Day game today.

In that vein, Matt Adams, Collin Whitchurch and James Fegan got together to exercise their existential dread, cast aspersions on the Royals, discuss the final bits of roster housekeeping, and deride the many mistakes of the Atlanta Braves.

Your Ultimate 2015 White Sox Spring Training Primer

Spring Training is finally here. What this means is we can all get excited about the sight of actual major league baseball players on an actual baseball field, and then cry over the realization that we're still six weeks away from meaningful games being played.

Still, the season of optimism is upon us, so let's take a look at some of the important things to monitor during the White Sox's time in Arizona.

September call-ups preview

Who is coming to make this more watchable?

The White Sox have lost six games in a row, and have the sixth-worst run differential and baseball. We knew they would be bad this year...and they're bad! So, what's next? Rosters are expanding, there's still no left-hander on the roster and Dayan Viciedo made a somewhat justified start on Sunday. Let's see what we can do here.

Bad things are still happening: Important stuff from Friday's 13-3 loss to Seattle

Boy, this is getting fun, isn't it?

Friday's 13-3 loss at the hands of the Seattle Mariners was yet another showing — the third in recent memory — in which the White Sox's pitching woes somehow managed to overshadow the offensive dry spell that is getting more and more pathetic by day.

Quintana v. Miley - Game Preview & Lineups 5/10

After a tough stretch against the Rangers, Tigers, and Red Sox, the White Sox have had a chance to pad their win total against the Cubs and Diamondbacks -- two of the weakest teams in all of baseball. Tonight the White Sox have a chance to go 2-games above .500 for the first time since April 2nd. However, although the Diamondbacks have been horrible this year,  Arizona's offense has been bad, but ordinary bad (25th or so in the majors). The main culprit has been their pitching staff as they are the only team in the majors to have allowed more than 200 runs. Therefore, on nights where they get a decent pitching performance they can be a tough opponent.

Weak links exposed as Cubs crush Sox to prevent a sweep

Coming into Thursday night, the White Sox thought Scott Carroll could be a useful temporary contributor to the starting rotation, Moises Sierra was worth a look in right field, and Maikel Cleto could at least serve as the last man in the bullpen. After the 12-5 clobbering the Cubs laid down to end the Crosstown Series, it's hard to see all three concepts lasting the night. Adrian Nieto even came in late and mucked it up behind the plate for a bit for the sake of completion.

Week In Review: Regressing to the Mean

The end of April and beginning of May were none too kind to the White Sox. After climbing a game above .500 and taking 3-of-4 from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, the White Sox promptly dropped four straight to division rivals Detroit and Cleveland before ending their week with a bang, thanks to Dayan Viciedo.

Dream of a White Sox contender

The White Sox have rather brilliantly managed expectations this season. They're a game below .500, their biggest development project of the season didn't survive the first road trip of the year, and their brawny offense also means that a large portion of their losses are of the bullpen meltdown/groinkick variety. And yet, they're regularly, and rightly identified as exciting.

Bullpen keeps game out of reach for offense, Sox drop finale

The White Sox strung together their fair share of hits against Max Scherzer and the Detroit bullpen, but the White Sox's own bullpen was unable to keep them within striking distance in a 7-4 loss in Thursday's series finale.

White Sox offense not missing bats, but neither is the bullpen

If Maikel Cleto is not the White Sox bullpen in a nutshell, he certainly was temporarily inhabited with its spirit Wednesday night. Possessed with nutty velocity and a slider that can look Sergio Santos-inspired, he has all the raw materials to be an effective high-leverage reliever.

Free Passes Give Free Win to Red Sox

Over 5 hours of walks, occasional run scoring, and a position player pitching ultimately resulted in the White Sox dropping a 14-inning affair by the score of 6-4 to the Red Sox. Pitching started out surprisingly effective before winding up familiarly awful, and a barrage of walks was too much to overcome as the series evens up at a game a piece.

Week In Review: What We've Learned After 13 Games

Alexei Ramirez punctuated an up-and-down second week of the season for the White Sox with his two-run, walk-off home run on Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. The victory gave the White Sox a 4-3 record for the week and raised their record against the American League Central to 6-4 at this very early point in the season, and the 3-1 series win over the Indians helped them exorcise some of the demons that haunted them after going 2-17 against the Tribe a year ago.
