White Sox acquire reliever Kahnle from Rockies

While we all continue to stare at the massive void that is the increasing likelihood that the White Sox will make no more than a series of minor moves this offseason, the team itself began that process on Tuesday when it acquired righthander Tommy Kahnle from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league pitcher Yency Almonte.

Kahnle is 26 and has spent the last two seasons being an erratic if not also intriguing arm in Colorado's bullpen. In 102 Major League innings he's struck out exactly 102 batters ... while also walking 59. Here's a Tweet I found about the guy:

Topping out at 98mph is nice, and it's not unlike the White Sox to covet a guy with an impressive arm who has lacked the consistency to be a solid Major League pitcher, but the real question in this deal is regarding the prospect they gave up, Almonte, a 21-year-old acquired from the Angels in exchange for Gordon Beckham who spent last season starting in both Kannapolis and Winston-Salem, putting up solid numbers when he wasn't injured.

This will likely be judged as the type of deal the White Sox are known for, acquiring an intriguing reliever in hopes that Coop Will Fix 'Em™, a la Matt Thornton or Bobby Jenks, but who's unpredictable enough to maybe be Andrew Sisco instead.
