Who Is That Tall, Lean Man Striking Everybody Out? - Game Preview & Lineups 5/22

Like many of you, I’ve spent the day taking down pictures, careful to not break the glass in the frames, blowing out candles, and folding sacramental cloth. The vigil is no longer needed. Our dark days have ended. Chris Sale Day is once again upon us. The time to rejoice is now.

The last time Sale pitched was more than a month ago. 127 pitches worth against the Red Sox. He struck out 10 batters and his only hit allowed was a monster home run to Xander Bogaerts that happens to be the longest at US Cellular this season not launched by Jose Abreu. Whether or not the duration of that start on a cool evening early in the season has anything to do with time missed, it was a nice game to keep in the memory until the next go-round, which comes tonight against the Red Sox's chief rival, the New York Yankees.

Yankees starter David Phelps started in the bullpen, was a closer candidate for a bit and then ultimately was moved to the starting rotation. The variation in role isn’t new to him, he’s shuffled from the bullpen to a starting role in the last couple seasons as well. As a starter he hasn’t been asked to go deep, 5.1 innings is the longest of his 3 attempt, the most recent of which he went 5 scoreless striking out 5 Pirates hitters in the process.
