How About Some Runs This Time? - Game Preview & Lineups 4/8
/Jose Quintana can’t be the king of no-decisions forever, right? In the first night at high altitude, where the runs supposedly flow like beer, the White Sox offense failed and Felipe Paulino didn’t do much to help the cause either. The odds look better tonight. With Jose Quintana leading the way and the prospect of the offense falling flat two days in a row at Coors, the pale hose have a decent shot at pulling up at .500 for the 3rd time on the young season.
In his first outing of the year Quintana pitched well enough to lead the team to victory, but the rest of the team had other ideas. He allowed just 2 earned runs, but another 3 unearned were tacked on while he stood on the mound. 8 men struck out by his hand and in the 7th inning when a reliever came to the mound in his stead, the scoreboard showed a healthy 8-5 lead. A bullpen meltdown later, and Quintana’s got as many no-decisions as he does starts for 2014. Jose has never pitched against the Rockies, much less at Coors, but does carry a solid interleague performance record for what it’s worth (very little) with a 2.08 ERA in 39 innings.
Franklin Morales is slightly more familiar with the White Sox than Quintana is with the Rockies. Morales spent the last 2+ years in Boston and has faced Chicago on 4 occasions, each out of the bullpen including a pair of “holds” earned last season. With Colorado he has moved back out of the bullpen and into a starter role. In his first 2014 outing, his first start since May of 2013, he lasted 5.1 innings and surrendered 3 runs en route to a loss in Miami. Without the cushy pitching environment but with perhaps a little more confidence in his role the lefty will attempt to stall the Sox offense a little longer.
