Read MoreWhen last night’s game started, the White Sox record was 3-4, and their Pythagorean record was also 3-4. When the game ended, their record was 4-4, and their Pythagorean record moves to 5-3. That’s the power of offense. We anticipated that there would be some, just not to that extent. So tonight, let’s anticipate some more, and hope our expectations are once again exceeded.
Read MoreJose Quintana can’t be the king of no-decisions forever, right? In the first night at high altitude, where the runs supposedly flow like beer, the White Sox offense failed and Felipe Paulino didn’t do much to help the cause either. The odds look better tonight. With Jose Quintana leading the way and the prospect of the offense falling flat two days in a row at Coors, the pale hose have a decent shot at pulling up at .500 for the 3rd time on the young season.
Read MoreThe White Sox continue a six-game road trip with their first visit to a National League park on Monday as they begin a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
The White Sox are 6-3 all-time against the Rockies, including 5-1 at Coors Field. However, the teams haven't faced each other since 2011 when they won two of three, also on the road.
Read MoreNow it’s a matter of not getting swept. But Chris Sale to the rescue! There’s the hope that this isn’t a microcosm of the season. Rattle off a couple of losses and then rely on Chris Sale to bring it back home and stop a negative streak. The series finale has arrived and regardless of the score, the outcome is a trip to the Rocky Mountains.
Read MoreAt 2-2, the rationalizations start. 2-1, and you still feel pretty good. Two wins every three games the whole year through puts you in play come October. 2-2 and you’re a loss away from dropping below .500, and who knows for long. Then you think about difficulty of opponent, but you have to shake your head and not think about it, because it’s not good for your overall game attitude and let's face it, it's a long season.
Read MoreAfter a season of losing to pretty much any team that bothered to show up with 9 players, the Royals no longer have any sort perceived hold on the White Sox. They beat them same as everybody else, at about the same rate to boot. Shame for Kansas City, since 2013 was supposed to be the year they got off the list of baseball’s most unsuccessful franchises of the last quarter century. Today starts a new ledger, with the Sox riding high on a series victory against a Twins team that gives them no real gauge of their overall value, while the Royals lost a couple of heartbreakers to the Tigers before losing the privilege of a series finale to weather.
Read MoreJose Quintana has a little bit of pressure on him. It’s his first appearance since signing a 5-year contract. He’d be doing the team a large favor if he went deep into the game after yesterday’s bullpen stretching. He’s tasked with sustaining the unbeaten streak to a hefty 3. It’s cold and rainy out and I don’t know how that translates into pressure but I’m sure it creates pressure for somebody. Maybe Quintana? He’s probably not worried. Why should he be?
Read MoreRobin Ventura has stated that it’s not a straight platoon in left field, but more a matter of who has the hot hand. This instantly makes me wonder what he plans to do when neither Alejandro De Aza or Dayan Viciedo are hot but at the moment that’s a moot point, seeing as how De Aza currently sits atop the league in homeruns. Adam Eaton and Jose Abreu collected a couple of hits each in their White Sox debuts, making their names known to the casual fan and with the power of the tiniest of sample sizes the White Sox head into game 2 feeling like things could be ok.
Read MoreDid we spend more time waiting for this opening day than last year? It seems like it. The winter was long and brutal like the season that preceded it. Or it could be that I always think the gap between seasons seems longer than the last time. In truth the days flipped off of the calendar at a standard rate, and now we all sit on the first of what we hope to be many Chris Sale Days of the year. To be celebrated near-weekly for as far into the future as I care to plan.
